Now this is refreshing.

Beginning was awesome! Got my head bobbin' immediately from it's coolness.

But vocals are too quiet and so are some backing instruments, y'all need an audio engineer or something to bring everything up and balance it. That is it's primary flaw that keeps it from getting a 10.

But the bass at 2:27 was mighty funky, keeps the score high along with the intro and the decent everything else. I just dig the hell out of this...just wish some elements were so quiet. I gotta give it up to y'all for effort and GREAT musicianship, it's like I was among you at a live show. Voted 5!

Thanks for the critique, the next anything we do we will be paying closer attention to all of those aspects too. But thank you muchly for the compliments, glad we dont disappoint!

Metroid Medley Is GO!

Pretty solid, dude. I've listened to it on loop several times, and the synthetic symphony sounds mostly flawless. The only part that I think wasn't up to par with everything else was that weird, very obviously synth piano at 1:20-1:26...in my personal opinion, the...how do I put this... "Nerfness" of the notes just kinda throw off that part.

But everything else? Hell, I was impressed with how the guitars actually successfully illustrated the armored space bounty hunter as something more awesome and action-packed then the original VG music she once represented. Like I said, I really like how the symphony orchestra instruments turned out. Not once did the drums stand out as programmed, either. I'd say that was a huge mission accomplished in keeping the whole thing balanced.

I was never a die hard fan for Samus except for in Smash Brothers, so I didn't immediately identify the songs as exclusively a Nintendo-esque VG soundtrack. That broadens it's accessibility to flash animations and games alike of the sci-fi or action variety. I could easily see this integrated into a flash project on the front page, so get to shamelessly self promoting yourself, dude! :D This earned a five, it's evident you worked hard on it.

Hey thanks for reviewing so soon!

"Pretty solid, dude. I've listened to it on loop several times, and the synthetic symphony sounds mostly flawless."

That's thanks to East/West's brilliant samples. I've only got the Silver version which is like their cheapest product and I still have access to such amazing sounds.

"The only part that I think wasn't up to par with everything else was that weird, very obviously synth piano at 1:20-1:26...in my personal opinion, the...how do I put this... "Nerfness" of the notes just kinda throw off that part."

Hm... I don't exactly see what you mean. 1:20 is the same piano sound used from the whole song (taken from East/West too, and I tried varying the note velocities to make it sound real). It's a piano with some strings being played with it at the same time.

But hey, I'll look into it and see if anyone else thinks the same!

"But everything else? Hell, I was impressed with how the guitars actually successfully illustrated the armored space bounty hunter as something more awesome and action-packed then the original VG music she once represented."

That's awesome, glad you were impressed! The original music isn't exactly action-packed, but the melodies are generally excellent which is why I enjoyed remixing them.

"Like I said, I really like how the symphony orchestra instruments turned out. Not once did the drums stand out as programmed, either. I'd say that was a huge mission accomplished in keeping the whole thing balanced."

Dude, I'm SO GLAD you think the drums don't sound programmed, haha. I had that problem before in my other orchestral/rock song (the Chaoz Fantasy Orch/Rock Remix) and people did point it out, so I worked especially hard on making the drums sound more real here by varying the velocities, adding subtle changes and fills, and whatnot.

"I was never a die hard fan for Samus except for in Smash Brothers, so I didn't immediately identify the songs as exclusively a Nintendo-esque VG soundtrack."

I'm not a fan of Metroid either (I never played any of the games)... in fact I only caught a glimpse of Samus in Brawl (and even then I don't enjoy playing as her xD). It's thanks to a friend of mine that I began hearing Metroid songs/remixes, enjoying them and eventually making this remix.

"That broadens it's accessibility to flash animations and games alike of the sci-fi or action variety. I could easily see this integrated into a flash project on the front page, so get to shamelessly self promoting yourself, dude! :D"

I'll be right on it! :D

"This earned a five, it's evident you worked hard on it."

I sure did. Thanks a lot for the review and the 5, I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Not forgetting the signature, I see. Nice work :P.

You're onto something here

I know it's just a work in progress, but I'm still miffed that it abruptly ended at 44 seconds in, just when it was about to get good. When there was only TONS of possibilities for it to grow. I'd like to see how a full-fledged Trance track like this will turn out. That bass sounded great, but you know the full track will need more.

If it were me, I'd find a sexy british woman to sing about something eventually :P hope you have a more fitting, trance-like ending prepared for the final product. Voted 4, you'll have a 5 from me waiting for the full track. I like what little I've heard, give us more!

Jacob responds:

I do hate that it's so short at the moment. See, I'm debating on how many parts to make this in. I may just continue from where I left this off, beginning a much larger buildup into a much more powerful climax. But, I might also extend the bit where the bass came in. Decisions, decisions...
This is why I have all of you. :L
Thanks for the review!

EDIT: Come to think of it, it's actually sort of flattering to know that you were a bit annoyed by the abrupt ending - it shows that it left you wanting more. This could be incentive enough for me to finish it, for sure.

I'm not sure I care for this.

You rapped, that's for sure...but there's no character behind it. From the first sentence to the very last word, the tone and delivery is exactly the same. I can get past the slight lisp, but you sound exhausted, and every line seems blandly read. It sounds like you're just reading it.

I think the better rappers out there sound like they mean what they're saying, is what I'm implying. When they're rhyming about someone they love, they sound tender. When they speak of killing, they sound ruthless and cold...they make you believe what they're saying. Throughout this, I pictured a white kid hunkered over their keyboard, eyes darting around while playing Battlefield.

I mean no disrespect. My point is at no point did I believe anything you rhymed about. The only time I was immersed into the environment you're trying to emote is the opening tune with the helicopter sound effect. That's it. There's many missed opportunities for immersion... for instance, early on you you describe a lightning strike, and instead of following that with a dramatic thunderclap, you have...what...chains rattling? :( Even the explosions and gunfire you include during the chorus are weak and barely audible...

But those aren't important. What you should be emphasizing is TELLING. YOUR. STORY. This needs acting. "TANKS! CHOPPERS! PEOPLE PLANTIN' BOMBS! WHERE'S THE TEAMWORK RAISE THE ALARM!" You should be sounding off like a goddamn murder machine berserker...otherwise it just sounds like a gamer wheezing into his mic for his teammates to hear his call as they spawn. If you tell the story weakly, it will overall seem weak...and that's no good when you're talking about tactical maneuvers, the horrors of war, seeing combat. Even then a voice crack here and there could fit...if done right it could add to the drama of the story you're telling. But here, in my personal opinion, it's weakly executed. It's not acted well.

You don't have the stress of a singer in worrying about hitting the right note, being in proper pitch. You're a lyricist...pacing is your primary weapon, acting should be your second. Interesting lyrics, though.

Luke responds:

I appreciate the criticism, this isn't my best. Definitely.

Let me know what you think about that?

Hahahahahaa!!

Simply incredible production value. I'm happy I could listen to this before you have to delete it, you're certainly a heavy-hitting talent in the Audio Portal.

The piano sounds fantastic, and the instruments throughout the song that compliment it are of superior quality. I wish to learn how to compose scores of similar stature in the future...you made it your own, you're a total inspiration! :D

NickPerrin responds:

After a certain point I decided there was no need to remove it, but by the time I realized I should edit the description above to reflect that decision, the song had already reached 6000 listens and I couldn't edit it! Anyway, rest assured it's going nowhere. Here for all to listen/download.
Thanks for the review, glad you enjoyed.

SO Metal!

I wish I could hear the rest of it; this completely kicks the original's ass! Keep thrashing, because after hearing this and "I Bleed Fire" I've become a fan of yours. :D

Burn7 responds:

Hah, that's awesome! Thanks a ton for using my song in your flash dude, even the small amount of extra attention is way cool.

But now that you've caused the song to get extra attention, I guess that means I'm going to be pressured into finishing it, doesn't it? :P

Sounds awesome!

Perhaps the drums could have way more punch, but other than that, it sounds pretty well-done!

jamesadalpiaz responds:

Thanks, I'll take it into consideration.

Reminds me of Racer X, to a degree.

Fuckin' ROCK ON! This pumps ya up, and I could see a lot of flexible potential for this being in a game, or an action packed dog-fight or something.

...It's so heavy, I came. Keep up the great work, MetalJonus!

Metaljonus responds:

Thanks!

Heavy and Retro! "BEWARE COWARD!"

This is SICK how awesomely heavy it is...and I always loved the oldschool games like Sinistar, even as a wee-kid trying to play games like my older brother did.

I can't get over how badass 1:04 sounds...this is the song that made me a fan of yours. I'm going to check out your other stuff now! My only complaint is the fact that it IS short, but y'know what? I can still dig it. Really well-done, dude!

Gorgorothx responds:

heh thanks, dude ;) This one's a little different compared to my other stuff, but I hope you enjoy

Channel Differentiation Ftw

Elaborate on this, you really got something going on here. I think it's becoming clear what I liked on ".:Tribute:." in here. Needs drums, needs bass, and it needs length!

If this was just a test, fuckit. You got things together pretty good. Now throw everything you've learned so far into a full-fledged track and build from there!

Bloodman101 responds:

Haha! Thanks for the support, hopefully I will make a next song soon! :D
